Johalla Projects is formally hosting an emerging art area at the Lakeview Arts Festival. Johalla Projects is a group of artists and curators that manage an independent project space. The collective, which was established in the fall of 2009 by Anna Cerniglia, is a venue for emerging and mid-career artists.
In conjunction with the Lakeview Chamber of Commerce, Johalla Projects aims to attract new business, provide entertainment, and bring the art community and its supporters to this corridor of Lakeview. Johalla will collaborate with artists, each of whom will create an installation-based exhibit consisting of crafts, posters, toy art and more. The Johalla Projects section of the Lakeview Arts Festival will emulate a car sales lot with creative signage and flags. The section will include organizations and artists such as Chicago Zine Fest, Rebecca Rar Rar Press, Steff Bomb, Matthew Hoffman, Brooks Golden, Adie Janci, Reckless Records, Graham Cracker Comics and a Poster Alley featuring Ryan Duggan, Johnny Sampson, Rick Leech and Josh Davis.
Some displays to look forward to: at the entrance to the designated Johalla Projects space, there will be two large, silver deer sculptures by Andrea Jablonski, taken from our Urban Dwellers public installation. Also, artist Steff Bomb will make a large, fabric drum set on which children can play, and Chicago Zine Fest will set up a workshop table. There will be workshops explaining book-binding zines and one-page zines. Zines are an effective, though unconventional, way to show one’s art without publications. It has successfully provided a national platform for many artists. Additionally, Rick Leech will be demonstrating printmaking. We will also be serenaded by music from DJ British Knights! These are just a few of the displays that will be featured in the Johalla Projects area of the Lakeview Arts Festival.
