Night Visions: New Work by Heather Gabel

While much of Heather’s earlier work deals with beautifully macabre imagery intertwined with stark lines and the graceful opulence of the past, Night Visions seeks to explore emptiness and loss, personal connectivity with the dead, and the preponderance of a spiritual after life—something more. Gabel’s new work also interrogates the inherently obsessive nature of grief while embracing the compulsive, and often consuming, self-created rituals custom-tailored to free the feelings we wish not to suffer, but the raw pathos that is unifying and undeniably human. While these experiences shape and change us; sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse, a compression of time and personal, intimate histories foster an environment where a glitch in the records of memory can be highlighted, manipulated, and expressed.
The show will include new mixed media collage, photographs, prints, and shirts.
About the Artist: Born in Windsor, Canada in 1977, Heather started drawing and painting since she was a tiny child and has never stopped since. She attended the Center for Creative Studies in Detroit on a photography scholarship and finished her arts education at Columbia College in Chicago with a bachelor of Fine Arts degree. She exhibits both nationally and internationally, at present.
Her work is at once nostalgic and contemporary as she is inspired to create imagined situations culled from her best dreams and worst nightmares offering a look into what was, what is and what will never be. Experienced with many mediums, she combines, photography, painting and collage in a unique fashion to create iconic images that have a lasting impact on the viewer.

Heather Gabel has long been known as the artist behind the macabre imagery of Chicago’s punk legends Alkaline Trio. For over fifteen years, Gabel has been combining skeletons, lace, blood, back-alley surgery, and the style of a depressed-but-classy European great-grandmother to create one of the most enduring, stylish, and instantly recognizable branding campaigns in underground music. Now, Heather Gabel is bringing a show to Chicago’s Johalla Projects that features a retrospective of her own work as well as her work with the band, exposing the genesis of her iconic Alkaline Trio designs. The installation will include the original xeroxed/ hand drawn / cut/ pasted t shirt designs for the Alkaline Trio plus notes, album art, old photos, and sketches all pulled from Heather’s archives and displayed in classic ‘high school kid bedroom wall flyer collection’ style.
At the opening reception on Friday, October 7th at 7 pm, Ms. Gabel will be on hand to answer your questions and will be releasing her limited edition book featuring all of the t shirt designs she’s done for the band as well as a limited edition series of prints of 10 designs hand picked by herself and the band that span the entire 15 years that they have been working together. This exhibit is a must-see for fans of Alkaline Trio, fans of Heather Gabel’s art, aspiring artists, anyone interested in branding, collectors, or anyone who just wants to get their picture taken with a pretty girl. So, Chicagoland vampires, punks and lovelorn little skeletons, this is your warning: October 7th at Johalla Projects. Be there or forever kick yourself for missing out on the exact point where your favorite art meets your favorite music.

Johalla Projects is excited to announce that we have moved to a new space in the Hubbard Street Lofts, located at 1821 W Hubbard Street, Suite 110, Chicago, IL 60622. With added help from Aimee Quinkert, Emily Barney and Michael Pedersen, we will continue to be dedicated to our mission of presenting emerging and contemporary art.
Anna Cerniglia founded Johalla Projects in the fall of 2009 as a live/work project space, and, in a year, it grew into a full-fledged gallery space. We have had many wonderful experiences on Milwaukee Avenue; but, thanks to our artists and patrons, Johalla Projects, once again, needs to expand. Though we are sad to leave our home in the heart of Wicker Park, we will still have a presence in the community: our application for the Adopt The Station program is in progress, and Anna Cerniglia remains on the Wicker Park Arts Committee. We look forward to having a larger space that will better showcase our artists’ work, as well as having The Post Family and Spudnik Press among our new neighbors.
Our first event in our new space will be on October 7th with a reception of work by Heather Gabel and a retrospective of her work with Alkaline Trio, in honor of their 15-year anniversary. We hope to see you there.
